The brilliant Russian violinist Maxim Vengerov, having just turned 30, is preparing for a new challenge: he has commissioned a concerto from composer Benjamin Yusupov that requires him not only to play viola, but also to learn improvisational jazz on the electric violin and, most demanding of all, to dance tango on stage. Filmmaker Ken Howard joins Vengerov at the Abbey Road studio in London, where Vengerov records Beethoven's Violin Concerto with his friend and mentor, Mstislav Rostropovich. The journey continues in Moscow, then to the musician's birthplace in the Siberian capital of Novosibirsk, then to Paris for a training session with legendary jazz violinist Didier Lockwood, then to Israel to rehearse the new concerto with Yusupov, then on to Amsterdam, where he meets his tango partner, the ex-ballerina Christiane Palha, and finally to Hanover for the world premiere of the Viola Tango Rock Concerto.
